German is the official language in Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein, one of the official languages in Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg, as well as a regional and co-regional official language. Until 1990, it was also one of the official languages of Namibia.

Some assessments say that German is spoken as a mother tongue by approximately 120 million people (especially in Central Europe), meaning that this language has the largest number of speakers in Europe.

German is the third foreign language studied in the world (after English and French), despite the fact that the increasing influence of English has been affecting lately the international role of German.
